Spotlighted in the darkness, Alejandro Cartagena’s dancers look lost in their own world, the chaos and crowds of Mexico’s NRMAL music festival vanishing in a blur of pure rhapsody. Long documenting life in Mexico, Cartagena recently has turned his attention to notions of youth – the trials, triumphs and joys of being young. His series Bliss asks individuals to let go and let loose while listening to the music, suspended in the energy and madness of the event. With thousands attending NRMAL every year, Cartagena had no end of willing subjects happy to allow the pounding rhythm and blasting lyrics carry them away into the night.
