Photo du jour: Hokkaido’s Enchanting Blue Pond
Seen through the lens of photographer Lawren Lu, the Blue Pond of Hokkaido, Japan resembles a marbled tapestry or an eerily still mirror. The pond owes its otherworldly hue to to the existence of aluminum hydroxide, a mineral used in water purification that transforms the water daily from icy turquoise to emerald green. Lu’s composition captures the seeming immateriality of the water; richly toned tree trunks that emerge from its depths float weightless upon the electric shadows. Behind its reach, normal greenery resumes, but in the pond’s domain space and time is frozen, if only for one magnificent instant.
