Cavaliers is Nashville-based photographer Tammy Mercure‘s ongoing chronicle of the South, the place Times columnist Bill Maxwell says “we started out with in this bizarre, slightly troubling, basically wonderful country.” Since 2008 Mercure has been documenting events in the Southeast US, putting together a dynamic survey of history, land, spirit and culture, while letting us in on some unique, southerly events—NASCAR races in Tennessee, extreme bull riding in Virginia, and the world’s largest machine gun shoot in West Point, Kentucky, to name a few.
