Melbourne-based photographer Bill Gekas has long admired the classic works of old European master painters, and it shows in his ongoing series of exquisitely executed portraits with his young daughter as lead subject. Gekas says of his new takes on old classics; “Although there are references to old paintings in these works, it’s not so much about recreating the known works but more about recreating the atmosphere the old masters’ works were known for.” And he has done just that in his mix of past and present—seamlessly employing modern-day strobist lighting techniques to channel the beautiful light characteristic of the era.
