Nashville-based photographer Tamara Reynolds’ series Southern Route explores the complexitites of the South, or what she calls the many “chasms that run like broad veins, dividing black from white, rich from poor, and neighbor from neighbor in a region driven by extremes of wealth and poverty, religion, and a centuries-old class system.” Checkered with a past of slavery and years of segregation, the South is also a place celebrated for its rich literature and art. Growing up in Tennessee, Reynolds has been witness to the chasms she describes, and as a photographer she works to unveil an all encompassing look at her native land, struggling to “illustrate the beauty, the restrained dignity of the South and its people—alongside and within—what is difficult to see.”
