Vienna-based photographer Daniel Gebhart de Koekkoek takes us inside the Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant—Austria’s first nuclear plant to be built—in his series Zwentendorf. Built in the early 1970s, the plant never made it into operation after a referendum was passed in 1978 striking it down, along with future plans to build five more. A hefty expense, the Zwentendorf plant cost almost a billion Euros to construct. It is now used as a training and research site. Gebhart de Koekkoek gained access through a client of his who is one of the power operators—here he captures interiors that read like movie sets from decades past.
