Melbourne-based Emma Phillips‘ Salt beautifully depicts the unearthly realm of a salt mine on the Nullarbor Plain, in Western Australia. Phillips randomly came across the mine and made all the photographs in the series within the space of a couple hours. Because of the vastness of the white salt mountains, the few instances of color—sky, tractor, factory structure—seem as though they were hand-painted onto old, black-and-white industrial landscape photographs. This quality only serves to reinforce the visual appeal of this bizarre place on Earth.
Salt, self-published by Phillips, is available from Perimeter Books, in Melbourne.
