David Prince’s alluring photographs of unmade beds tempt us to luxuriate in clean white linens and warm sunlight. Shooting intimate, rumbled scenes in European hotel rooms and households, he exposes quiet, sumptuous narratives. Invited into private quarters, it’s easy to imagine mysterious honeymooners and rapturous exchanges recently past.
Prince’s seductive images also exude an inevitable sense of lonesomeness. Whatever happened in these clean, white spaces has come to an end, the imagined characters since departed, leaving only cool, wrinkled impressions in the wake of bodies. Antiquely furnished rooms mark the passage of time, touchingly reminding us of all the dreamy sleepers come and gone.
