Montreal based photographer Benoit Paillé believes photography doesn’t represent reality, but rather, it creates it. Intrigued by the idea of introducing man-made objects into a natural and untouched outdoor setting, he created a floating light installation set amongst a backdrop of various spaces for his series Alternative Landscapes.
Careful not to disrupt the physical landscape, Paillé used string to suspend a square light fixture at the center of the frame. The light appears to be hovering in mid air. Using long exposures, sometimes up to four minutes, he captures the surrounding area illuminated with an eerie glow. From forests to deserted building complexes, viewers are given a glimpse into an ordinary space re-imagined.
