Smoke and Laser Beams Transform Remote Landscapes

Loomings is an ongoing project by David Ogle and produced by Mark Devereux Projects that harnesses the drama of remote landscapes across England.

From beaches to caves, forests to mountainous dunes, Ogle has been able to document nature and the movement of smoke, laser beams, balls of light, and sunlight flowing throughout the surreal scenes. Each photo explores notions of materiality, permanence and the perception of objects in space.

The title ‘Loomings’ is taken from the first chapter in Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick where Ishmael had the feeling of being “pulled towards the wilderness and wanting to leave behind the constraints and domesticity of the city.”

Ogle says the majority of his work starts off as a drawing and then he imposes that onto a space. Previously, he created a brilliant light installation below Waterloo train station in London.
