In 2010, NYC-based photographer Anna Williams launched The Voracity, a collaborative project and online publication exploring themes of hunger, consumption and beauty. Each series is as unique as it is visually stunning and employs a mix of styles and techniques. How to Shoot a Wolf, issue 5 in The Voracity archive, draws inspiration from a period of time during World War II when food was anything but abundant. While magazines at the time tackled ways to approach the new reality of food rationing a la making do with less, M.F.K. Fisher published ‘How to Cook a Wolf,’ a soulful guide to deeper nourishment amidst the trying times—’how to be cheerful through starving’ and ‘how to comfort sorrow,’ among some of her tips.
Channeling the sentiments of the late American writer, Williams and her team of collaborators (incuding Heidi Johannsen of Bellocq Tea Atelier) have created a visual page turner in hopes to “recreate that feeling in the photographs, capturing not just the creative solutions that rationing requires, but also the indulgence of a meal cooked with love no matter how shoestring the budget,” she says. And the love we can feel—Williams sets a scene rich with nostalgia, creating a magical world of moments we feel that we’ve just snuck in on, reminding us that there are some hungers we can satisfy with heart.
Williams has collected numerous industry awards by Communication Arts, Society of Publication Designers, the PDN Photo Annual, AI-AP, and American Photographic Artists and her clients include Michael Kors, Herbal Essences, Williams-Sonoma, Ralph Lauren and Bellocq Tea Atelier.
