Perched on the 79th floor of an apartment building, photographer Daniel Cheong stares out to the tallest building on the planet, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Bathed in a rare fog, the cityscape seems to converge upon the single architectural monument, as if riding towards it on waves of atmosphere. Cheong shot this photograph in an instant of transition, at a precise moment when night turns to day and temperature shifts with miraculous simultaneity. In Dubai, fog only occurs about 10 times a year, when the weather is in flux.

Cheong works before sunrise, at an hour before the city lights are dimmed, so that they might paint the thickened sky with gentle strokes of pale pinks and royal blues.
