“Jenny, relax, the ants won’t bite.”
Photographer Jenny Riffle returns to a place full of memory and nostalgia for her series The Sound of Wind. As a young child growing up in Washington state, Riffle had a distinct recollection of standing near a fire pit in a meadow and suddenly discovering her feet covered in ants. Though she began jumping and screaming in a panic, she was reassured by simple, calming words from her father. Riffle came back years later to recreate the scene, now having her friend place their hand amongst the ants and repeating her father’s words of wisdom. After being so long away from the Northwest, Riffle’s The Sound of Wind acts as a reflection and re-appreciation of the land she calls home.
